HSJ Awards 2024 – The Shortlist!

Two of Skin Analytics’ NHS partners have been shortlisted for the HSJ Awards 2024, following the implementation of DERM

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CWFT) and NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board (SNEE) have been shortlisted for the HSJ Awards 2024, recognising an outstanding contribution to healthcare and securing a place at the prestigious awards ceremony later this year.

NHS partner name: Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Award category: Driving Efficiency Through Technology
Project title: Demonstrating the clinical value of AI-powered Teledermatology: Transitioning from Pilot to Sustainable Standard Practice.
Project overview: Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust partnered with Skin Analytics in 2022 to implement a skin cancer pathway using DERM, artificial intelligence as a medical device (AIaMD). Since launching, the service has undergone extensive post-market surveillance and health economic modelling. The pathway has continued to enhance efficiency with skin cancer conversion rates increasing by 67% and demonstrating that 37% of cases could have been autonomously discharged after DERM assessment – all whilst maintaining clinical value. This has enabled the Trust to transition from pilot to a sustainable, business-as-usual solution.

NHS partner name: NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board for the work across PCNs in West Suffolk, the North East Essex GP Federation and West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust
Award category: Provider Collaboration of the Year
Project title: ICB-wide collaboration and innovation to support early skin cancer detection and drive sustainability using AI
Project overview: To address rising dermatology referrals, West Suffolk Foundation Trust (WSFT) partnered with Skin Analytics in 2021 to implement an AI-driven secondary care skin cancer pathway. In 2023, Suffolk and North East Essex ICB were funded by SBRI to deliver a Skin Analytics pathway in primary care at North East Essex (NEE) and West Suffolk (WS). The WS pathway has direct engagement with the secondary care Trust who sit on the project group. The ICB, primary and secondary care organisations have worked in partnership to improve patient care, the quality of referrals into secondary care and support early skin cancer detection.

More than 1350 entries have been received for this year’s Awards, with 234 projects and individuals reaching the final shortlist. The high volume and exceptional quality of applications showcases the impressive levels of innovation and care continually being developed within the UK’s healthcare networks.

Following the thorough judging process, CWFT and SNEE were shortlisted, ahead of the official awards ceremony to be held later this year (21st November).

The event will not only reflect the HSJ Awards’ enduring ethos of “sharing best practice, improving patient outcomes and innovating drivers of better service” but will also serve as a timely and well-deserved thank you to the sector.

The 2024 awards judging panel was once again made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, including; Stephen Powis, National Medical Director, NHS England, Rosa Waddingham, Chief Nurse, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICB and Matthew Style, Director General, Secondary Care and Integration Department of Health & Social Care, as well as a range of esteemed Chief Executives from NHS Trusts across the UK.
