AI Appreciation Day 2024

It’s AI Appreciation Day so we’re celebrating the human behind our AI as a medical device – Dr Jack Greenhalgh, Skin Analytics’ AI Director.

Without Jack, DERM would not exist, or perform to the high standard we’re so proud of.

Jack joined Skin Analytics having worked in computer vision and machine learning in both industry and academia for many years. He holds an MENg in Computer Systems and a Ph.D in Computer Science.

Hear a little from Jack and his work at Skin Analytics on AI Appreciation Day:

‘I first started working in artificial intelligence in 2009, and have seen the field transform dramatically in that time, with the performance of neural networks across a range of tasks exceeding what was previously thought to be possible.’

‘My love for this work comes from the amount of creativity required to solve the problems we face. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been stumped on a problem for days, only for a new idea to present itself from the most unexpected place. But having good ideas is a waste if they aren’t turned into a reality, and at Skin Analytics I’m surrounded by an amazing interdisciplinary team who help to turn these ideas into something real, and do so in a way that’s safe, effective and evidence driven.’

‘If deployed responsibly, artificial intelligence and machine learning have the power to deliver enormous benefits to health care. However, these technologies can also cause harm if not built with great care. I’m incredibly proud to work in a company which prioritises building artificial intelligence ethically and responsibly. This means placing clinical evidence at the core of everything we do, only training our models on data collected with informed patient consent, and ensuring that positive patient outcomes are delivered while also providing health economic benefits.’
